Can Masonite Solid Core Doors Survive a Rage Room?

By Masonite

We put one of our solid core interior doors in a rage room against a standard hollow core door. Here's what happened.

Let’s face it. Home can get a little chaotic sometimes. And whether it’s kids, pets or just your own clumsiness (we won’t judge), your house can experience wear and tear from all kinds of things. When it comes to the doors in your home, it’s easy to dismiss them as an everyday fixture or, honestly not even think of them at all, but in reality, they’re some of the parts that get used — and beat up on — the most. At Masonite, we’re always thinking about how doors can make life better for homeowners, which is why we put our products to the test to make sure they can stand up to all sorts of real-life situations.

Not too long ago, we took our testing a step further when we put one of our solid core interior doors inside of a rage room to see how it held up to some above-average at-home destruction. We added a standard hollow core door in the mix, too, for comparison. Here’s how they did.

The Test: Door vs. Destruction

Just how solid are solid core doors? That was the question we set out to answer in our rage room test. Most homes are typically furnished with hollow core doors, which look and function the way every door should.

But, when it comes to standing up to life’s everyday bumps and bruises, they lack durability and density — hence the name hollow core. First, we wanted to see how strong hollow core doors were, so we began by putting one of them into the rage room to see how much of a beating it could take. Then, we invited a group of rowdy rage room-goers to unleash all their pent-up stress and anger on the door. They threw everyday household items such as kid’s toys and coffee mugs at the door and then swung some not-so-everyday items like weights and stools at it, too.

While the hollow core door stood up to the first couple of impacts surprisingly well, it quickly became no match for the onslaught of hurled objects, and a massive hole was ripped right through the center of the door. Rage roomers: 1, hollow core: 0.

Next, it was time for our solid core door to prove itself. We put one of our Winslow 3 Panel doors into the room and sat back as the rage commenced. This time, the participants did not hold back. They launched larger, heavier objects at the door and hit it with even more force than the first time.

But unlike the hollow core door, which bowed and cracked under the impact, our solid core door didn’t bend or break. It faced the destruction head-on and only came away with a few nicks and scratches that could be easily covered with a little paint. Not bad for a household door!

Simulated Conditions, Real-World Applications

It’s not likely that your household chaos will ever come close to that of a rage room — nor should it — but that’s exactly why we conduct tests like these. Ensuring products like our solid core interior doors can stand up to extreme conditions is what lets us confidently offer them to homeowners as superior solutions for their home.

From bedroom door-slamming teens to toy-throwing toddlers to the always-kicked-open laundry room doors, we want to make sure you’re prepared for every scenario. We wouldn’t ever want to sell anything less than the best, so when it comes to our solid core doors, their ability to resist wear and tear over time can translate to major savings on repairs, maintenance and replacements.

The Solid Core Difference

To better understand what makes Masonite solid core doors so sturdy, let’s examine a few of their distinctive features.

High-Quality Construction

Masonite solid core interior doors are made with 70% more material than our standard hollow core doors, making them a stronger, more premium option that enhances durability throughout a home—from heavily trafficked areas to more private spaces.

Superior Sound Control

Their added density means they also help reduce the transfer of noise between rooms, so you can create quieter spaces in your home that work for everyone. That becomes crucial when you have multiple members of a household living at and working from home.

Our solid core doors are available in a range of designs that complement any home’s style — from modern options like our Melrose 6 Panel Horizontal to transitional styles like our Livingston 3 Panel. We also offer Craftsman options like the Winslow 3 Panel used in our test, and even traditional designs like our 2 Panel Arch-Top. Rest assured, you’ll be able to find the perfect door (or doors) for your home’s aesthetic

A Leading Warranty

They’re also built to last, that’s why we cover our solid core interior doors with a 7-year limited warranty that extends two years beyond the 5-year coverage our competitors offer.

Strong and Sustainable

To top it all off, our solid core doors are made with more recycled material than our standard hollow core doors for a more mindful utilization of resources.

Overall, solid core doors are a solid choice for your home, providing a difference you can see, feel and hear.

Built for Real Life

Whether your home is lacking that premium feel, or your household just feels like a rage room of its own at times, don’t worry. We get it. We know that homes take a beating — and that they can be noisy, too. That’s why we test our solid core interior doors in extreme conditions, pushing them far beyond everyday situations to make sure that they’re more than prepared for whatever life might throw at them next.
